Automotive K-Line Introduction
K-Line is a serial communication line used by many older vehicle diagnostic systems. It is associated with protocols such as ISO 9141 and ISO 14230, but the exact initialization and diagnostic commands vary by vehicle.
K-Line and CAN
K-Line and CAN use different electrical signaling and communication arrangements. Some vehicles contain both. A cable designed only for K-Line does not automatically communicate with CAN-based controllers.
Supported Applications
A K-Line diagnostic setup needs a compatible interface, correct vehicle wiring and software that understands the selected controller. A matching OBD connector or vehicle badge alone is insufficient.
Before Connecting
Identify the controller and protocol using the vehicle documentation. Confirm pin mapping and driver requirements before use. Avoid applying a generic test signal to a communication line without an approved procedure.
